The driving test lasts for about 40 minutes during which time you will be expected to drive to a high standard showing the examiner that you are capable of coping with any situation that may arise in a confident and correct manner.
Before the test commences you will be required to take an eyesight test. You must be able to read a standard size number plate at a distance of not less than 20 metres with glasses if worn.
At the beginning of the test you will be asked a number of questions concerning vehicle safety checks such as oil, coolant and brake fluid level checks. For a full list of questions click here.
The test includes a number of manoeuvres including reversing around a corner, turn in the road, reverse parking, reversing into a parking bay and an emergency stop.
The route taken will include many different road and traffic conditions from busy town centre driving, fast dual carriageways to complex multilane roundabouts.
For a period of about 10 minutes during the test you will have to drive independently. The examiner will either give you a series of diagrams or will ask you to follow road signs to a particular location. If you go the wrong way you will not be penalised as long as you do it safely. You may ask the examiner to repeat his instruction if you are unsure of the directions or you forget where you are going. For more information click here.
